An Investigation on Effective Factors on Success or Failure of Nanotechnology Start-up Companies in Iran

Abstract

New and advanced technologies play a crucial role in national competitive advantage. Among these advanced technologies, is nanotechnology which many countries and investors pay attention. According to this, the role of active companies in this field is of great significance and access to competitive advantage in macro level can be achieved through continuing activities of this companies. The purpose of this study, however, is to offer a model of effective variables on success or failure of nanotechnology start-up companies in Iran. The study population involves: managers, owners and experts in the field of nanotechnology. Due to limited statistical population, global census from the population was performed; also both companies with background above 3 years and companies who came out of this industry were taken into account. The effective variables on success or failure of nanotechnology start-up companies in Iran were identified reviewing the literature, then analyzed the data using two-way ANOVA test in MINITAB®. Results show the effect of variables: characteristics of entrepreneurial founders, level of education, industry and management experience, having a business plan, the amount of funding, access to bank loans, access toother supports, access to network and laboratory facilities (outside and inside of the country), access to government market, access to supply network, access to distribution network, level of innovation, type of ownership, technical knowledge, connection with academic professors, close relation with financial institutions, individuals, companies and institutions outside the country are confirmed.
