Abstract

Purpose: The main objective of this paper is to investigate the role of supply chain management in research-development projects and to provide a conceptual model for project supply chain management efforts specially designed for project-based organization.
Design/methodology/approach: This is a conceptual article examining current perspectives of project supply chain management applied in project-based organization requirements. It provides a general framework for project supply chain management.
Findings: Providing a conceptual project supply chain management framework can be applied to organizations practically. This framework has been applied in a large case study in Iran and is supported by practical implementation in defence industries, one of the most important high-tech industries in Iran.
Practical implications: This paper provides a very helpful guideline for practitioners in implementing project supply chain management throughout the organizations and especially in large scale ones.
Originality/value: The paper may be of high value to researchers in the project supply chain management field and to practitioners involved with SCM adoption in the organizations. This study further opens up new lines of rescarch and highlights implications for project supply chain management efforts, including change management programs through SCM tools. The paper also provides a synthesis and analysis of the viewpoints and the main factors as reflected in the literature on various dimensions of project supply chain management.
