In this article we tried to analyze the effects of organizational capabilities presented by Chandler - especially managerial and marketing capabilities - on success of small and medium technology based firms. For this purpose, experiences of four small and medium technology based firms - which applied for guarantee letters of an Iranian credit guarantee fund - have been studied. Results of this analysis show that two out of four firms was nearly close to guarantee letter default, and both of these two firms had important defects in their managerial and marketing capabilities. So we can conclude that beside other Chandlerian organizational capabilities, managerial and marketing capabilities are important in survival and success of small and medium technology based firms. For this reason, financial institutions and science and technology policy making institutions should consider managerial and marketing capabilities situation and improvement, in their interactions with small and medium technology based firms.
